The prehistory of Fiss is difficult to recreate. This is also true with regard to other Tyrolean villages. It is known that a long time before the birth of Christ a tribe, the Veneto-Illyrier, arrived, cleared the woods and settled on the sun plateau. In the first and second century AD the Romans conquered the Alps and called it Rätien. From the union between the indigenous people and the Romans the Rhaetians evolved.
It is interesting to know that the old Roman road, that went over the Reschenpass pass to Augsburg, did not go through the valley but the plateau of Serfaus-Fiss. The old preserved Roman bridge at Tösens proofs it.
In the year 1288, the name 'Füsse' was mentioned for the first time in a document. In 1928, an access road to Fiss was built. After the Second World War Fiss became a popular summer spot for guests.
It also became a popular spot for winter sportsmen after the first ski lifts were built in 1967 in Fiss. Tourism is the main source of income of the entire plateau. In 1974 the community of Fiss received the municipal coat of arms of the Regional Government of Tyrol. Today Fiss has about 900 inhabitants, approx. 200 families. Despite the fact that there is much more tourism on the sun plateau of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, Fiss has kept its characteristic atmosphere.
It is still a nice Tyrolean mountain village. Most people have lived here for generations and are closely linked to the village, people and history. How proud the inhabitants are of Fiss can clearly be seen in the many traditional clubs and ancient customs that characterize the village as well as sense of community.
